What Qualifies as an Industrial Design?
According to Article 2 of the governing law, an industrial design refers to any:
- 2D composition: Lines, colors, or patterns.
- 3D configuration: Shape or surface design.
These designs provide a unique appearance to industrial products or traditional crafts, including textiles. Designs with purely functional or technical purposes are excluded from protection.
Design Registration Process
- Formal Examination Only: Applications are reviewed for compliance with procedural requirements.
- Separate Applications: Multi-design applications are not permitted. Each design requires a separate filing.
- Arabic Translation Requirement: An Arabic translation of the priority document must be submitted to avoid formal objections.
- Time Frame: Design registration typically takes 6–12 months.
Priority Term
Applicants may claim priority within 6 months from the date of filing their initial application.
Protection Period
Registered designs are protected for 15 years from the filing date, ensuring long-term security for innovative designs.
