Saudi Arabia Sees Sharp Rise in Patent Filings Amid Innovation Push
Saudi Arabia recorded a strong surge in patent applications in 2025, reflecting growing awareness of intellectual property protection as part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 innovation drive.
According to the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP), patent filings by individuals nearly doubled, rising from 2,007 in 2024 to 3,942 in 2025 — a 96% increase. Applications from national institutions also rose sharply, climbing from 408 to 734, representing 80% growth.
These increases pushed the total number of patent applications in 2025 to 10,300, up from 8,029 in 2024. SAIP attributed the growth to expanding awareness among innovators, streamlined registration procedures, and stronger support for protecting intangible assets.
Saudi Arabia’s progress is also reflected internationally. In the 2025 Global Intellectual Property Index published by the US Chamber of Commerce, the Kingdom ranked 40th globally, with its score rising 17.5%, placing it among the fastest-improving economies worldwide.
Since 2019, Saudi Arabia’s overall IP score has increased from 36.6% to 53.7%, marking over 40% cumulative improvement in six years. This advancement is credited to legal reforms, enhanced enforcement mechanisms, and regulatory modernization led by SAIP in alignment with Vision 2030.
